Before Toto was formed the members of the group performed sessions for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session percussionist Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs' 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in 1976 following the collaboration.

Turn Back, Toto's third studio album was criticized by critics for the absence of hit singles. In 1985 the group's singer Fergie Fredericksen left, and the band held auditions to choose a new frontman. The band chose guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in 1986.
